"What’s Cinco de Mayo Really About? The History Behind the Celebration"

Updated News Today,May 5,2025, 8:53 PM

Cinco de Mayo, observed on May 5, marks a significant moment in Mexican history—but it’s often misunderstood in the U.S. Contrary to popular belief, it’s not Mexico’s Independence Day (that’s September 16). Instead, Cinco de Mayo commemorates the Mexican army’s victory over France at the Battle of Puebla in 1862, a major morale boost during the French invasion led by Napoleon III.

The underdog win by a vastly outnumbered Mexican force helped prevent France from aiding the Confederate army in the U.S. Civil War, and the event has since held cultural and historical significance, especially among Mexican-American communities. The first reported celebration was in California that same year.

Today, nearly 1 in 5 Americans plan to celebrate Cinco de Mayo, mostly through dining out, drinking, or spending time with family and friends. Though the holiday’s roots are historical, it has also evolved into a broader celebration of Mexican culture, cuisine, and heritage—and a major moment for food and drink deals.
