WASHINGTON — The White House on Tuesday strongly criticized Amazon’s reported plan to display the costs of former President Donald Trump’s tariffs alongside product listings on its website.
“This is a hostile and political act by Amazon,” White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt said during an April 29 press briefing. “I just got off the phone with the president about the Amazon announcement.”
Leavitt questioned Amazon’s motives, citing the Biden administration's inflation record. “Why did Amazon do this when the Biden administration hiked inflation to the highest level in four years?” she asked, further accusing the company of having ties to Chinese state interests, claiming, “Amazon has partnered with a Chinese propaganda arm.”
The controversy emerged following a report from Punchbowl News revealing Amazon’s decision to visibly attribute a portion of product prices to tariffs imposed during the Trump administration. The move has sparked renewed tensions between Trump and Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos, who has been seeking closer ties with the new administration and has reportedly met with Trump several times since the 2024 election.
Leavitt, accompanied by Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, held up a news article featuring Bezos during the briefing, underscoring the administration's concerns about the retail giant’s intentions.
